Aanvankelijk was deze historie van het schildersambacht een artikelenserie in Eisma's Schildersblad. De auteur heeft deze artikelen aangevuld, van uitstekende kleurenfoto's voorzien en daarna in boekvorm uitgebracht. Achtereenvolgens worden besproken: a) de gilden, b) verf, c) gereedschappen, d) oude technieken, e) de opleiding. Het is interessant de ontwikkeling van de gilden door te lezen met de strenge normen voor 'gezel' en 'meester' die toen waren vastgesteld. Na het gildetijdperk kwam later de Vereniging ter Veredeling van het Ambacht en daarna de landelijke vakopleiding. Bij het onderwerp verf komen het ontstaan, de samenstelling en pigmenten aan de orde, daarna de werkplaats en de gereedschappen.
