American art of the 1960s

In this first issue, 'American Art of the 1960s, ' devoted to a period of great intellectual ferment in the arts, essays address such topics as the dialogue between abstraction and figuration and the relationships among movements as diverse as Minimalism, Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and California light-and-space art. More specific topics include studies of Jasper Johns's prints; Ad Reinhardt's influence on young artists; the film director Elia Kazan; the evolution of Jim Dine's work in the Happenings movement; and an interview with Robert Venturi on the twenty-fifth anniversary of his book Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, published by the Museum in 1966.
