Charles Bonnet (1720-1793) was a Genevan naturalist and philosopher. In 'Contemplation de la nature', first published in 1764 and one of his most popular works, he sets forth the theory that all the beings in nature form a gradual scale rising from lowest to highest, without any break in its continuity.
