For twenty-eight years the Berlin Wall existed as a physical reminder of the Iron Curtain and as an enduring symbol of the Cold War. On November 9th 1989 the wall was taken down. This book marks the decade since this event; it outlines the history of the wall, its significance as a functional structure, as a monument and landmark, and as a complex social and political entity. The book takes us beyond the fall of the wall to a survey of the less than 2km of ruins that remain, to the graffiti and artistic projects surrounding the wall, and to present-day memories and myths.
