The Spirit of Solitude is the first volume of a biography that seeks to describe Russell's intellectual achievements, his political work and his tortured emotional life in a single narrative, in such a way as to shed new light on all three. It is the product of five years of research into Russell's vast ouvre of published work and into the original documents - letters, manuscripts and papers - that Russell left behind. Many of the sources used have previously been unpublished, including hitherto embargoed letters to his lover Constance Malleson and his second wife, Dora.
