Marcel Gautherot
The Monograph
Omschrijving
This is the first monograph about the important French photographer Marcel Gautherot (1910-1996), who moved to Brazil in 1940 and stayed there throughout his life. Gautherot became famous for his photographs of the construction of the capital Brasilia, where he first portrayed the workers and construction sites and then the finished buildings in their glamorous elegance. Some of these photographs are among the icons of modern architectural representation. For the first time, Gautherot's entire photographic artistic path can be understood in this book: travel and landscape impressions, ethnological image explorations and Brazilian customs, everyday photographs and formal experiments, as well as the examination of the modernist formal language. That The book brings together 200 carefully reproduced photographs from all creative phases, enriched with essays by international experts. It accompanies an exhibition at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris in summer 2016 and is published by the Instituto Moreira Salles in Rio de Janeiro, which houses Gautherot's estate.
