Omschrijving
During the last decades interest in the history of the eighteenth-century ecclesial politics has substantially increased. A good many authors are seeking to acquire insight into the fascinating confrontation which took place between the Church and the ideas of Enlightenment. Dries Vanysacker PHD (Leuven) is one of these authors. He wrote a very vivid biography of Cardinal Giuseppe Garampi (1725-1792). Garampi's broad personality is well-documented: he was a great traveller, an author, at the same time a clever politician active as nuncio in Warsaw and Vienna. On other moments of his career he was bishop of Montefiascone-Corneto, and Prefect of the Vatican Archives. (All historians know the Schedario Garampi!) Dries Vanysacker based his study on primary documents gathered in Rome, Rimini, Verona, Florence and many other places.
