Deutscher Protestantismus und Judentum 1932/1933

Analyzes those elements of Protestant thought that in 1933 enabled most of the leading Protestants to accept Nazi antisemitic policy. Discusses the views of representative theologians, most of whom distinguished between the Israel of the Bible and the Jews who had rejected Christ and were cursed by God. The leaders of the Church looked forward to cooperation with the Nazis in the building of a "Christian state". They were divided in their reactions only when Nazi policy infringed on the integrity of the Church. The only important exceptions were Karl Barth and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Discusses the latter's essay on the Jewish question (March-June 1933) in which he interprets the Jewish fate not as Israel's rejection by God but as part of His inscrutable plan of salvation.
