Omschrijving
Second printing, issued 30 March 1923, three days after the first edition, first printing of 27 March 1923 (as stated in the colophon) of this seminal Japanese photobook. It combines forty-eight photographs by Shinzō Fukuhara (1883–1948) with some of his most influential texts on photography and the expressive possibilities of light and tonal harmony.
The book met with immediate success. At least twelve printings followed one another with remarkable rapidity during the spring of 1923 untill the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1 September 1923, a disaster that ended the activities of the Photographic Art Society.
Rebound in full vellum. Complete with all illustrated covers, cloth spine, photographs, text pages, and advertisements. Original slipcase replaced by a new, professionally made slipcase. Slight foxing and age-toning. Otherwise, a well-preserved copy from a very early printing of a most important publication in the history (and theory) of Japanese photography.
