The first two volumes (of 6) of the first 4to-edition of the famous Ancient History by the French historian Ch. Rollin (1661-1741). The first 12mo-edition was published 1730-1738. Nicely illustrated with engraved frontispiece author's portrait and 9 folding maps with hand-coloured borders, drawn by d'Anville: the known world of the Ancients, Egypt, the Carthaginian Empire, the expedition of Hannibal through Spain, the Alps and Italy, the Middle East with all its historical empires, Greece, Magna Graecia, Syracuse and the expedition of Cyrus through Asia Minor. Several engraved head-pieces showing historical scenes (i.a. Hannibal meeting Scipio Africanus, battle of Salamis, Pericles in Athens, ...).
