In Hiding

Memoirs of Benninga, born in 1925 to a wealthy Jewish family in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, based on his own recollections and his father's diary and wartime notes. After the German occupation, his father's business was "Aryanized". In September 1942 he went into hiding with his parents and sister. From January 1943 they hid on a farm in the village of Kortenhoef, near Hilversum, for a large fee. Their hostess repeatedly abused them verbally and physically, and often threatened to throw them out. In January 1945 Benninga's mother and sister left and went into hiding with Reverend Boes in 's-Graveland; Benninga and his father joined them in April, just before the liberation. After the war the family settled in the USA, where Benninga converted to Christianity.
