Mid-Georgian Portraits, 1760-1790

The National Portrait Gallery's great sequence of illustrated catalogues of the collection embraces the period from 1500 to 1860. This volume covers the late eighteenth century, the golden age of British portraiture. The artists include Gainsborough, Reynolds and Romney; their sitters such figures as Garrick and Johnson, Sarah Siddons, Emma Hamilton, Warren Hastings, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and George III.
A brief biographical note accompanies each sitter, followed by a detailed examination of each of the Gallery's portraits. This is followed by a complete iconographical list, selectively illustrated, of images of the sitter to be found in other collections.
