Omschrijving
Picasso's 1950s works are still today synonymous with "Modern Art" and their impact on the reception of contemporary art as well as on everyday areas of life such as design, advertising and fashion can hardly be overestimated. That makes it all the more surprising that, with all the publications on Picasso, no catalogue survey has yet been devoted to this period of his work. This task is now taken up by the Saarland Museum with a presentation that aims both to take an in-depth look at these works and to strengthen our understanding of how the 1950s feeling for form was seminal both artistically and in terms of many aspects of present-day life. The 1950s mark a key period in both the life and work of Picasso, in which public and political issues are juxtaposed with more private, intimate concerns. His work during these years can also be seen as a transition to the later works, to which increased scholarly attention has been paid of late, as reflected in the large-scale exhibitions currently taking place.
