The Japanese Print: Its Evolution and Essence

A selection of more than a hundred Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints in full color, including several fold-out triptychs, tipped in and bound with spacers. The work of the most important artists of the seventeeth to nineteenth centuries, these faithful reproductions cover a wide range of subject matter: portraits of actors, genre scenes, landscapes, comic scenes, beautiful women and more. In addition to an introductory text of three chapters, the plates are accompanied by extensive captions with full descriptions of artistic details, biographical material about the artists, and an evolutionary history of Japanese prints. A special section by the adaptor, C.H. Mitchell, covers criteria for selection, market value, and the care of prints.
