Thomas Hardy's England
Our England 100 Years Ago
Few novelists have portrayed their surroundings as faitfully as did Thoams Hardy; none has made so detailed a record of the struggles and strivings of rural society as it changed into the modern world. Small wonder that he was also attracted by the documentary world of photography, particularly as practised by the photographer Hermann Lea.
In Lea Hardy found more than a sympathetic camera-eye.Together, on foot, by bycicle and later by motor car they toured Hardy's Wessex.
