New French illustrated edition of this treatise on painting by Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Illustrated with frontispice author's portrait and 44 plates after Poussin - of which 10 folding - showing bodies, body parts and positions, perspectives, mathematical figures, landscapes, etc.
Da Vinci never published anything, but his favourite pupil Francisco Melzi, who had inherited all the manuscripts of his master, made a manuscript compilation around 1530 of da Vinci's major studies and findings on human anatomy, light and landscapes. It was first published as a painter's manual in 1651.
