Calloway traces the evolution of historicist-decoration as well as the more usual modernist design. He has divided his study into 7 dialectics: the legacies of the past; the avant-garde & the revival of period styles; the lure of antiques & the modern style, pleasing decay & the all-white room, austerity & the new new look, alternative lifestyles & reflecting success, the cultof design & the new ornamentalism.
