Ian Curtis was born in Stretford, Lancashire, and grew up in Macclesfield. He met his Joy Division bandmates Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook at a Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall, Manchester, in 1976. Later joined by drummer Stephen Morris, Joy Division released two seminal post-punk albums: Unknown Pleasures (1979) and the posthumous Closer (1980).
