Europe is under fire, both literally and figuratively. The war in Ukraine represents an indirect attack on the European model, and the European Union (EU) is also facing heavy internal criticism from various quarters. At the same time, Europe remains an attractive continent for many, with countries lining up to join the EU.

A lot is expected of the EU. How can the European continent survive in a world that seems to become increasingly hostile and complex? Can Europe even maintain its position? And if so, how can the EU guide the European way of life through the 21st century?

Steven Van Hecke is professor of European politics at KU Leuven and visiting professor at the University of Sarajevo. He conducts research on European political parties, EU institutions, and the history of European integration. In 2024, he wrote the book essay Het kantelende continent (Acco), which has now been expanded and translated as Brave Old Continent?.
