2 volumes uniform contemporary full calf with 5 raised bands and gilt decorated spines. The title gilt to a red morocco title ticket, the volume number to a separate title ticket. In very good condition, both volumes with a little damage to the covers, the spine ends worn, the the titlepage and the final page a but smudged, otherwise very clean.

4to. With a total of 73 folding copper engraved plates in the two volumes. First French edition of this translation of Smith's Complete System of Opticks (1738), by Esprit Pézénas (1692-1776). This work, which was largely based on Newton"s great opus, was a "popular, mathematical and philosophical treatise on the principles of light, the properties of the eye, reflection and refraction, methods of grinding and polishing lenses" (British Optical Association Library I, 194).
