Dirty windows

Only 3 pages of text at the rear. This is the author’s first book, featuring voyeuristic images taken through a small bathroom window during the very cold winter of 1993-94. From an open window of an apartment in Wall Street, the two tiny windows of an after-hours sex club opposite could be seen. The images in this book only suggest the existence of a sleazy world, rather than graphically recording it. Merry Alpern was born in 1955 in New York City. She attended Grinnell college ('73-'76), studying sociology. She began her career as a free-lance photographer in NY in 1977. Her work is represented in collections including The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, Foundation Cartier Paris, The Houston Museum of Fine Arts and The Los Angeles Country Museum of Art.She is the recipient of a 1988 Leica Medal of Excellence, a 1990 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a 1995 Louise Comfort Tiffany Award. Two monographs, Dirty Window (1995) and Shopping (1999), were published by Scalo. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
