Omschrijving
Otto van Veen’s Emblemata Horatiana is a richly illustrated emblem book that combines classical wisdom with moral instruction. First conceived in the early 17th century and reissued in this 1684 edition, the work pairs quotations from the Roman poet Horace with finely engraved allegorical images and concise explanatory texts.
The volume contains 103 copper-engraved plates, each presenting a visual allegory designed to illuminate themes such as virtue, moderation, friendship, love, and the fleeting nature of life. Intended for an educated readership, the book reflects Renaissance humanist ideals, using classical literature as a guide to ethical living. The engravings, executed with clarity and symbolic richness, make the volume both an intellectual and artistic object, highly valued by collectors of emblem literature and early modern illustrated books.
