Frankenstein is a deeply passionate story of a monstrous creation, which has terrified and chilled readers since its first publication in 1818 and tells the story of doctor Victor Frankenstein, obsessed with the idea of creating life, who plunders graveyards to create new human beings from the bodies of the dead, which he shocks into life by electricity and which are botched creatures, rejected by its creator and denied human companionship, that cause nothing but murder and destruction. Stepping far afield from his medical studies, Victor Frankenstein brings to life a human form, that he has fashioned from scavenged body parts and horrified by his achievement, he turns his back on his creation, only to learn the danger of such neglect. He realizes, that he has made a terrible mistake since in his desperate pursuit to create life, he has created a monster, which was abandoned by his creator and master and shunned by everyone it meets, follows Victor Frankenstein to the very ends of the earth with horror and murder in its recycled heart. In this first edition of Frankenstein, published by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley in 1818, she takes the reader on a journey through St Petersburg, to the beautiful Swiss Alps, to the desolate waste of the Arctic Circle, in a story that has sent a chill down the spines of generations of readers. Written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley when she was only 20 years old, Frankenstein has been hailed as both a landmark of Gothic horror fiction and the first modern science fiction story.
