Happy Together

In modern Western eyes, Jan Christiaan Braun's amazing photographs of a gross of decorated graves elicit both shock and recognition. We are shocked by the incongruity of informal messages and vivid, colorful bric-a-bric in the solemn setting of a cemetery. But the shock is accompanied by recognition of a deep human inpulse: the desire to remain in contact with beloved family and friends who have died.
