"Julia Margaret Cameron (1815- 79) was in her late forties when she was given a camera by her daughter. Within two years she had developed her hobby into a fine art and had begun to establish for herself a style and reputation all her own. Mocked and patronised by the press and photographic societies, she nevertheless prided herself on her deliberate opposition to the prevailing conventions of her fellow professionals.
