From the Preface: "The following is a sketch of my experiences living, working and traveling with Mama. the quotes are hers, at times interpreted freely to convey the meaning and feeling of her observations, at times more literally to capture the metaphorical lyricism of her perception. Aama's approach to life is unique and personal, yet at the same time representative of other Gurung and Nepali hill folk of her generation. Most of Alma's interpersonal relations concern everyday matters, but her occasional reflections, whether objective, humorous or philosophical, show a profound realization of her specific place in the universe - a universe in which she is only in a physical sense not well-travelled."
