Cardinal de Bernis (1715-1794) was a French diplomat and friend of Voltaire with whom he maintained extensive correspondence. He was introduced into politics by Madame de Pompadour, who was won over by his gallant verses. He was admitted to the Académie Française at the age of 29, and at the age of 37 he was appointed ambassador to Venice, where he developed a great friendship with Casanova. This collection contains epistles and gallant verses, as well as some parts addressed to the author.
