Old Indian Trails

The author, at the age of 26, joined a Blackfoot Indian camp on the plains of northwestern Montana in 1896. There he met their chief Mad Wolf, who adopted him as a son. He maintained a friendship with the Blackfeet for many years, keeping records of everything he saw and heard - their customs, legends, religious beliefs, hunting trips, as well as the flora and wildlife of the country. The purpose of this book was to record the results of 15 years' close association with the old Blackfoot chiefs, medicine men, and common people now that the old generation of Indians have died and their children have become "civilized".
