Printmaking in Paris

In the years 1890-1905 Paris was under the spell of a true fad: the art of printing. Whereas the print used to be a means of reproduction or did it serve a political purpose, now there was an increasing emphasis on artistic quality and the printmaking became an autonomous art form. Almost all French modern artists experimented with lithography, etching or woodcuts as artistic means of expression, resulting in beautiful, often colorful works of art.
