101 Billionaires was inspired by an article in Russian business newspaper Finans Magazine, which reported that there were 101 billionaires in Russia, just 18 years after the end of communism. The next year, on the same day that the first edition of 101 Billionaires sold out, the same paper reported that the number of billionaires in Russia had fallen from 101 to 49. This reduction inspired the publication of a second and revised edition of 101 Billionaires in a smaller format and without the original 16 folding plates.
