Often thought to be a series of uprisings rather than a single revolution, the Dutch Revolt saw the Netherlands breaking away from the domination of Spain, with its monarchy and landed nobility. Although resistance to Spanish government came slowly, the Netherlanders were united in their desire for religious tolerance, finding an ally in the newly Protestant England.
