When thousands of young women emigrated from Ireland to become house servants in Australia, they knew that they would never see their families again. This was the dreadful price to be paid for fleeing a life that was barely worth living. Between departure and arrival, were three months which tested an immigrants mental and physical endurance. Penniless and frightened, they stepped into a social and physical environment that was strange beyond their imagining.
