Words for Images

Poems deepen the artistic experience of the art objects from Yale's European, American and African collections. Among the 22 distinguished alumni who participated were: Robert B. Shaw, who waxes poetic about a Calder sculpted cat. Paul Kane pens a suite of poems for designer llonka Karasz's silver service. Karl Kirchwey poses questions for Alberto Giacometti's sculptured "Hands Holding the Void." John Burt ponders Kasimir Malevich's painting, "The Knifegrinder." Peter Sacks pays tribute to the unknown sculptor of "Head, " of the Lega people of the Republic of the Congo (the poet also comes from Africa).
