Omschrijving
Anthony Caro is one of the world's most respected and influential sculptors. Best known for his radical brightly painted abstract steel sculptures of the 1960s - and, more recently, for London's Millenium Footbridge, the slenderest, most graceful of steel structures, designed in partnership with architect Norman Foster and engineers Ove Arup & Partners - Caro has been a continual innovator in a career that spans over half a century. Working in New York, Canada, Italy, Japan, Barcelona, and Provence, as well as in his native Britain, Caro has drawn inspiration from critics such as Clement Greenberg, from Abstract Expressionist painters, industrial steel mills, the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, and from collaborating with craftsmen skilled in such traditional materials as ceramics and handmade paper. This handsome book, published to mark Caro's eightieth birthday, offers a complete introduction to the sculptor's life and work to date. Included are two substantial new interviews with Caro, presenting vivid accounts of the creative process, personal recollections of other artists such as Henry Moore, David Smith, and Kenneth Noland, and fresh insights into his own work. The interviews are accompanied by archival photographs of Caro at work over fifty years; also illustrated are Caro's latest works from the series The Way It Is, as well as key sculptures made throughout his career and now in museum collections worldwide. Anthony Caro: A Life in Sculpture is a compellingly written, beautifully presented introduction to one of the greatest sculptors of our time, and its essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary art and culture.
