Burgundy was, and is, not only geographically located at the heart of Europe, but also its art and architecture were central to the art movements of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. That is the premise of this richly illustrated, chronological study of Burgundy's contribution to medieval art. Beginning in the 11th centruy, Droste discusses the Romanesque and Gothic periods, focusing on Cluny, Vezelay, sculpture and Cistercian art. The final section looks at the 14th and 15th centuries, the age of the Grand Dukes.
