The first gaze is that of our visual confrontation, our emotional reaction to the painting's composition, to the relationship between various tones and the background, which often consists of flat panes of vivid color. Some canvases suggest the visible through abstraction, similar in intent to the last paintings of Nicolas de Stael. For others, where only the imagination of the viewer projects itself onto the painting, its title intervenes as a meaningful poetic dimension forcing him to rethink his comprehension of the work. The process that consistently leads figurative art to become iconic and informal art towards concept is diverted by Gilot to build anamorphosis.
