Authoritative surveys of the major aspects of the modern sport are set against the background of seventy-five years of eventful history. This is traced from the formative period when Edwardian behemoths were driven by truly heroic men, through a first Golden Age in the 1920s when Duesenberg, Fiat, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo and Delage forced the technical pace, and their drivers became the first aces of the sport, to the 1930s when the mighty Mercedes and Auto Union teams raised the speeds and the stakes.
