Make a submarine, but make one that is a hundred per cent. Don’t turn it into an arty little sub. There’s a good chance that in the end it doesn’t function at all, but that is irrelevant. The point is that you respect the character of the machine. It’s not a submarine sculpture, it’s not an oil-on-canvas submarine. Because you have made it, and because you are so crazy about submarines, your sub embodies The Submarine, just as the other thingsembody The Flying Machine.”
